Clinical Observation of Minocycline in Urethritis

Abstract
The effectiveness of Minocycline in the treatment of acute urethritis was evaluated in the Department 1 of Urology, Seoul National University Hospital during the period from August to Obtober, 1971.
Our clincial study was performed on 28 patients who visited our outpatient clinic with the complainsts
of urethral discharge. These patients were studied by bacterioscopy with Gram¢¥s method of staining
and culture in blood agar plate and chocolat agar plate.
In this study, the patients were divided into two groups; gonorrhea and non gonoccal urethritis. i Gonorrhea was 18 cases and non-gonoccal urethritis was 10 cases.
The doseage schedule was 200mg of Minocycline (two capsules) at in tervals of 12 hours on .first day and then 100mg at interval of 12 hours for con-secutive 3 days in gonorrhea and in non gonoccal
I urethritis, 200mg of Minocycline at intervals of 12 hours on first day and then 200mg daily for 6days.
In this study the patients who had received other medieation for a period at least two days previously l were excluded.
Clinical Results
Gonorrhea:
Satisfactory clinical results were obtained with Minocycline for 4 days.
Results were good in 12 cases (67%), fair in 3 cases (16.5%) and poor in 3 cases (16.5%). ( Non-Gonoccal Urethritis:
In this group, the therapeutic results were favorable in 70% of all cases. (7 cases of 10).
good; noclinical symptoms and labaratory signs.
fair; urethral discharge and microorganism dissapeared, but white blood cell in urine still abnormal. poor; persisted clinical symptoms and laboratory signs.
As side effects,gastrointestinal symptoms (unpleasant feeling of stomach, nausea, or diarrhea) were
observed in 3 cases and dizziness in 2 cases out of 28 patients. Other side effects such as pigmentation of skin, heart burn glossitis, and weakness were unot observed in this study.
